Comments from Nick of Getting Greener.
"2010 saw the dryest first six
months for over 70 years and this was followed in 2011 by some parts of the UK (especially the Midlands) seeing one of the
driest years on record! As predicted, many are seeing alternating periods of heavy rain and little or no rain.
Under these circumstances it makes perfect sense to capture and store rainwater during rainy periods to use it during
dry periods.
"Rain is, after all, a free and abundant resource. It can't be sustainable to be purifying
water to drinking standards, piping it to homes nationwide and then using it for garden watering, car washing or even flushing
toilets!
"Most homes in the UK receive at least 50,000 litres of water every year. Saving just a fraction
of this means a constant supply of clean water and puts less pressure on our mains water supplies.
"Don't
just use the house roof to collect rainwater. Sheds, greenhouses and conservatories can all be used as well and often
the rainwater is closer to where it is needed!"
